The Beginnings

Gaming

Nik has been a gamer since a very young age. His earliest memory is of playing games such as Pacman and Space Invaders on his sisters' Atari 2600. At the age of about 4 his parents sold the Atari 2600 and in its place bought a SNES. It was on this machine that Nik truly developed his passion for gaming. Many hours were spent staring at the T.V. playing the likes of Street Fighter 2 (which is still a favourite of Nik's), Super Smash TV, Super Mario Bros and Bomberman.

In 1994 he moved to the United Kingdom and the passion for gaming only developed. Games were much more available to Nik, and so were other types of gaming. He eventually ended up purchasing a Sega Megadrive (Sega Genesis for some) and from there he moved to the likes of the Playstation, N64, Dreamcast and beyond.

PCs

While Nik's parents did own a laptop while in Kenya it was a DOS based machine which Nik didn't truly have a use for at the age of 5/6. However after moving they ended up buying the family a Macintosh which didn't really help develop Nik's passion for gaming on a PC. His first game was Doom 2 which he was able to play on his father's laptop which, at the time, was running Windows 3.11. Eventually they replaced the Macintosh in 1997, much to the rejoicing of Nik, with a PC built by Gateway which still sits in his father's office. This began Nik on his long path of gaming.

The Internet

Nik was an early user of the Internet. The first time he logged on was at the age of 6 in 1994. At the time his use of the internet was mainly sending an e-mail to his family in other parts of the world he slowly began to discover various bits and pieces that helped him grow in his understanding of the 'net. At the age of 9 Nik made his first website and developing websites has been an on-and-off interest for him over the past years. He eventually came to discover the brilliance of online gaming at the age of around 12 and since then has been hooked to online games.

Developments that lead to Eternal Vigilance

Cybertown

The first major development for Nik was the introduction to Cybertown in 2001 by a former school friend. It was through this Nik met his fellow founding member Harelin. Although communication was sparse to begin with they soon discovered they shared an interest in Star Wars Galaxies. They pondered creating a Player Association however these plans fell through when Harelin discovered another Player Association called The Guardians. A few months after Harelin had joined, Nik followed suit and became a member of the Guardians.

The Guardians and Star Wars Galaxies

Pre-Beta of SWG

Nik joined the Guardians in the 1st of July 2002. By then TG had begun to develop into a large community involved in various different communities such as Vagabond's Rest. In the pre-beta period Nik came to meet many of the founding members of Eternal Vigilance such as Doran, Raiyn, Arcarius, Shift and Sirgerbil. Many hours were spent idling in the IRC channel meeting more and more people and eventually playing various online games with them such as Warcraft 3.

SWG Beta

Around the time of March 2003 Harelin was accepted into Beta for Star Wars Galaxies. At the time, SOE were giving away two game keys for every new beta tested and Harelin kindly passed his buddy key to Nik. He was finally playing the game he had been waiting for for at least a year, and was finally going to become a Doctor which he had decided on long before the game had started beta testing. Through the beta testing period, Nik came to grips with the game and came to understand the mechanics of the game and also the virtual galaxy he was part of.

Release

Star Wars Galaxies released at the end of June 2003, however Nik didn't receive his copy until the 3rd of July 2003 due to a delay in delivering the package. Shortly after receiving his game Nik no longer felt that The Guardians was the guild for him and he left the guild to concentrate on trying to experience both sides of the Galactic Civil War. He still remained contact with many Guardians. Nik, after 3 months away from the Guardians, felt that it was time to rejoin having realised that the majority of his friends were in the Guardians and many of the things that he did were with the guild. Shortly after joining he took over the Guardian Medical Corps (GMC), which later became to be known as the Guardians Logistic Division (GLD).

Hiatus from SWG

Nik took his first break from SWG in April 2003. His GCSEs were approaching and he felt that these demanded his concentration more than SWG. The exams ended in June 2004 and he returned shortly after. In July 2004, Nik had a very long downtime period due to the weddings of his sisters and problems with this ISP. He finally returned to the game in August 2004.

Downfall of SWG

After coming back in August 2004 Nik felt that SWG no longer had the same feel as the game he had initially played and come to fall in love with. In Septemer 2004 he decided to leave the game for good and has never once looked back.

Post SWG and The Guardians

Around the time when Nik left many Guardians had already, or were about to, leave SWG. TG were starting to go deeper into World of Warcraft and soon many members were accepted into Beta. While Nik was accepted into the game school constraints prevented him from playing and he never got into WoW. Eventually SWG was dropped by TG so that their main focus would be World of Warcraft.

The Final Chapter of The Guardians

As mentioned before, TG decided to drop its SWG division which lead to TG losing a few of its members who came to form another guild. The way this had been handled wasn't to Nik's liking and he gradually began to distance himself from the Guardians. In December 2004 Harelin decided his time in TG had drawn to a close and left, much to the shock of the general member base. Upon reflection, Nik felt that he no longer had a place in TG as many of its efforts were directed towards a game that he didn't even play. The various problems accrued and on the 31st of December Nik left The Guardians. He was shortly followed by Dervish and Shadowmourne who decided to leave on the same day.

Eternal Vigilance and Beyond

Founding Eternal Vigilance

Shortly after leaving Nik was approached by Harelin and Arcarius about the creation of a new guild that they felt would fix the flaws in The Guardians. They shortly began to talk to each other at almost any period of time over AIM, MSN and over some forums that Arcarius had installed on his own personal website. Shortly after they approached the other former members of the Guardians such as Dervish, Shadowmourne, Elaemar and Doran about the creation of a new guild. Multiple chat conversations occurred daily and they, eventually, came to involve Arcarius, Harelin, Nik, Dervish, Shift, Sirgerbil, Elaemar, Darksilver, Raiyn, Shadowmourne, Doran and a short period later Waagnba came on board with the new project. They ironed out the basics of Eternal Vigilance and the guild opened its doors on the 6th of January 2005.

Currently in Eternal Vigilance

Nik is the Tribunus of Eternal Vigilance and holds a seat on the Legionary Council. He was formerly a member of the Counter-Strike Source Cohort however work once again got the better of him and he left the cohort to become a more casual player of the game. Currently Nik is a member of the Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Cohort and is eagerly anticipating the release of this MMORPG. Nik also used to be a member of the machinema series Where's My Gun? and still provides his vocal talents from time to time.

In his spare time he plays a bit of Badminton or reads - especially Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Popular Science. He can be classified as a very geeky person, and he wears the badge of geek proudly. He is an avid Star Wars fan and has watched the films a countless number of times. Nik also studies the martial art of Aikido, although he still only holds a white belt however this should change in the near future.
