Doran is one of many founding members of Eternal Vigilance. He originally played SWG in the guild, The Guardians, until he became dissatisfied with the way TG was being managed and felt that he was alone among the TG members. He left TG to join his close friends, Dervish and Nik, among others, in Eternal Vigilance. From January 15th till September 23rd, 2006, he was Consul for both genres (serving as FPS Consul first and MMO Consul second). He retired indefinitely from the Legionary Council, for a bit, before rejoining it in July 2007.

The Beginning

Doran was born in Hamilton, Ontario on December 5, 1986. He immediately moved from the hospital to Brantford where he lived for the next 18 years (till college).

Doran's entrance into gaming came when he was 6, when he got his SNES. Mario, Star Fox, Super Star Wars, and Zelda ruled his mind then. He also loved Star Wars, after he first watched it that same year. Doran became addicted to Star Wars, getting it himself and watching it over and over until he had memorized it. Doran is pleased to say he knows Han shot first. It was during this time that Doran made up the name Doran. After his 50th time watching A New Hope, Doran was trying to make up a name of his "character" he was "roleplaying" (like all 9 year olds did). Doran sprouted "Doran Nu" out of his mouth. It has since stuck with him.

Addiction

Doran spent a lot of time on his SNES and on his and his uncle's computer at his grandmother's house in Hamilton. It was on his uncle's computer that he was first introduced to X-Wing and TIE Fighter. Doran became a regular ace on these two games (XvT did not install properly on the computer for an unknown reason). On his own computer, Doran did not have the internet until 1999, and previously only played video games by himself or in a co-op on the same computer or over a LAN. In 1999, the ability to for him to expand his l33tness was finally available. Doran wasn't l33t however because:

  1. The term, l33t, was not invented yet.
  2. Doran wasn't as good as he thought.

But quitting was not an option...

Building up the skills

At this point, Doran had his own PC, an SNES and a Playstation. His uncle had gotten married and moved away, taking his computer with him. Doran's connection to his favourite combat flight sim was ripped away. Of course, games like Diablo 2 were available to him, as were his competitions with his friends. Doran had already been exposed to FPS's as well; his first being Doom. Others like Quake and GoldenEye 007 were played as well, and constantly.

Brief turmoil

In 2000, Doran's best friend IRL was killed in an accident, leading Doran to a heavily sheltered final year in grade school. This friend was his only connection to his other "friends" in that school, and when he entered high school, he had no friends.

Luckily, this tragedy turned Doran from an uptight, nerdish boy into the cynical, joke-making geek he is now. His friend being taken from him gave him a better look on life, and now Doran is unafraid, and pessimistic. He's also a careful objective analyzer.

"If you were to ask me if (my friend) had not died and I would have turned into the same man I am now, I'd say 'Fuck no.' If he had lived, I would have still been a clinger to him, and never built up the courage to direct my own life as I sure as hell wanted to. I am happy that he died at that time. I was a scared, little boy then, and I'd be one scared... tall man now if he hadn't."

Doran met new, much better friends in high school, with his improved attitude.

Jumping into the internet

His new friends were... well, some were geeks. They knew more about computers and video games then Doran did, and Doran learned all their skills (not all their computer skills, Doran still cannot program some computer languages). His one friend also frequented a message board, a message board Doran joined (that message board is now defunct. Most of its members are under a new message board that Doran still posts in, and does not feel he should reveal the name). Doran had already joined another message board before that, under the name kirbyultimate, which is still his AIM screenname, although Doran no longer uses AIM.

The big turning point for Doran came when he became extremely interested in Star Wars Galaxies in April 2002. He and his brother, Verada (now known as Raiyn), registered in a half-German, half-English message board for SWG. There, Verada found a post by a prominent member of an up and coming PA in this board. Verada signed up for this PA, and encouraged Doran to do the same. He did, after reading their forums, and made fast friends with its members. That "prominent member" was named Uncle. That up and coming PA was called The Guardians.

Go forth into the light

Doran joined TG on May 19, 2002, and was the 9th person to do so. By the end of 2002, TG already contained such future EV members as Arcarius, Harelin, Nik, Shift and Sirgerbil, along with Doran and Raiyn. TG had many light-hearted members, easy to make friends with. Doran chatted with them regularly on the boards, then IRC, and then Teamspeak. He also played many games with them like America's Army and Warcraft 3. These other games were needed to be played as the release date for SWG was lengthened from December 2002, to February 2003, to April, and finally, to June. As beta was opened, many of Doran's friends in TG got into it, but Doran did not. Play time was consideribly lessened at this point, and Doran took a break from TG between April and June.

Launch of SWG

Doran was active when SWG was launched at the end of June 2003. Doran was one of the first TG members to get the full game, riding his bike to his local EB Games, buying it and riding back, then announcing it to the TG members who still had not gotten it on IRC. The game was patched all day, but Doran finally got on in the later hours, creating his human character of Doran Nuiawrian (Nu was too short of a name). He played for a month, before closing his character down. Sony Online Entertainment had yet to release game cards for the game, and it was Doran's only method of payment. SOE finally came to their senses and made game cards available for purchase in October, thrusting Doran right back into SWG under a new character. This one, a Zabrak named Doriy Nuiawrisk, was played for a full year.

Initial doubts

Doran's doubts about TG arose when the leadership became handling a few things Doran found to be... "mishandling". TG continued to remain highly honourable in the server Starsider, but Doran did not agree with the re-banning of Sirgerbil on his second attempt to re-join the guild (Sirger had been removed prior to a dispute with a member of TG). Other things like a budding interest in World of Warcraft and old friends leaving their friendship with Doran behind for leadership positions was not well to witness. Doran did have a dispute with a TG member named Nikolai over the cosmetic looks of a starship seen in photos of SWG's first expansion, Jump to Lightspeed. Nikolai was a very unpopular member of TG, and Doran did not appreciate his attitude over whether the starfighter was a Cloakshape fighter or not. Nikolai "won" when it turned out SOE had created a brand new starfighter for the game called a "Hutt fighter". Although, Doran did not mind, as Nikolai's bad personality had already got him kicked out of TG.

Later doubts grew out of the 2004 US Presidential election. Many TG members supported President George W. Bush, and when Doran raised a few doubts about the President, he was blasted for his "immaturity". This turned out to be the biggest factor in Doran's final decision to leave TG a few months later. He consoled himself with his fewer list of friends in TG, friends like Nik, Dervish and Rain'star. He "retired" himself from all political topics in TG, and retired from SWG in October, mere weeks before Jump to Lightspeed was released.

Final factors

In November 2004, a dispute arose over the importance of two divisions in TG, Star Wars Galaxies and World of Warcraft. WoW was tearing up TG by storm, stealing members from other divisions like wildfire. In what looked from the outside (of the TG leadership) as "duct tape over an earthquake fissure", the SWG division was attempted to be revamped. The prominent members who had stayed in SWG during this time, including Rain'star, were extremely dissatisfied with the way the TG leadership had handled their division, and most members left the guild. Future EV member Waagnba left at some time during this. A post was made explaining to the TG memberbase what had happened, and it clearly pointed all fingers of blame on the SWG division members of causing the debacle. Doran saw this post as a cover-up, as some things mentioned in the post Doran knew those members of the SWG division would never do. Doran had known them, become their friends, and now they were being slandered, like traitors.

Doran's activity in December dwindled, but he still had no idea it would become his last month in TG. He never considered leaving, even after the cover-up story that had been shown was held up as gospel. December ended with a bang, as Doran's only friends in the guild, Dervish and Nik, left on the same day (Farkrash/Shift left on this day as well). Doran was confused, and suddenly alone. He contacted Dervish as to why, something he really felt he should have done with the SWG members, but didn't. Dervish was a little hesitant as to why he left, saying it was due to "differences". People were leaving all the time, Doran thought, but this time it finally hit home again. He continued to talk again to Dervish (and Nik) over the next few days, until they both dropped a time bomb on his lap. They were in talk with Harelin (who had left in December as well) about creating a new guild, one extremely different from TG in most ways. Doran's eyes perked and went solemn at once. He liked the idea, but would he sacrifice this guild he had been a part of for almost three years for it.

The answer was obvious. Doran was a lone soul in TG, only active in the message boards, and a vet that was lacking consideration by others in the guild. Doran pledged his full support for the initiative. Talks opened between him, Arcarius, Harelin, Nik, Dervish, Shift, Sirgerbil, Elaemar, Darksilver, Raiyn, Shadowmourne, and, eventually, to their joy, Waagnba, about the guild's structure and other essential things. Elaemar, Darksilver, and Shadowmourne left TG silently over the next few days. Arcarius left in a frenzy of a post, one Doran admired saying "I want to go out like that" on EV's first forums. Although Doran did not leave TG in the same way, he left by announcing the creation of Eternal Vigilance.

The True Way

Newfound respect in all forms came from joining EV. Doran was instantly made a Triarii and, soon after, a Tribuni Angusticlavii, a job involving being the editor of EV's main web page. Doran went through several close ranks during EV's first year, almost becoming a Centurion of a Star Wars: Republic Commando cohort, but he abandoned it after the game's multiplayer option was nowhere near as good as its single player. Doran joined the CSS cohort and stayed as an active member, only going through a brief period of decreased activity when his RL job to pay for his college tuition took over for 6 months. Doran returned, full force, in September 2005, returning to his grandmother's house in Hamilton, his birthtown, (ironically, his bedroom is the same room he first played X-Wing and TIE Fighter in) while going to school for a course in Television Broadcasting.

Election

Doran was elected to the position of FPS/RTS Consul in January 2006. EV's first Consul of the genre, and now a member of the LC, Doran is still editor of the web site (although he no longer has the rank of TA, a moot rank being on the LC...). He repeatedly says that the LC is "awesome". With that, he was elected to the MMO Consul position in May 2006, much to his pleasure. However, by August of that year, he had grown somewhat tired of the job and announced his decision to the Triarii not to run for re-election in the next term. He was replaced by Waagnba.

Other roles

Doran is also a voice actor for the EV CSS video series Where's My Gun?, and plays games like CSS, X-Wing Alliance and Planetside.

The above list is incomplete. Members other than Doran are unable to complete it, unless they enjoy stalking him.

Doran recently wrote an angry rant directed at director Uwe Boll. In it, Doran acknowledges Dr. Boll's unfortunate situation, yet blames him for not realizing the failure of his movies as the cause of it.

Real Life

In that crazy Real Life place, Doran is a Television Broadcasting student. He does well in his studies, and Doran hopes to be a writer or director or something. He's not quite sure yet.

Doran almost had a career in computer programming, before Doran's final year of computer programming class in high school and Doran's destructive meeting with the language called Java. Doran loathed (and still loaths) Java and wished for the days of second-year Visual Basic again. Doran had hoped to move into C++ and, eventually, video game design, but since Java was incredibly difficult to him and C++ could only get worse, Doran left the field of computer programming. Doran STILL hopes for either a movie or television career and might possibly write some video game scripts, since they're becoming like movies anyway.

Doran is also currently researching to become fluent in the fictional Star Wars language, Mando'a, currently being developed by author Karen Traviss. Since the language is not a full, working language yet, Doran only has this to say:

"Vode An, Mando'ade. Par kote." This translates to "Brothers All, Sons and Daughters of Mandalore. For glory."

Likes and Dislikes

Television

Doran enjoys watching TV when not doing anything on EV. Being a Television student, he calls this "homework". Doran's favourite TV shows are (in order of importance, top to bottom):

The TV shows Family Guy, Firefly, Futurama, Invader ZIM, The Simpsons, That '70s Show and The West Wing are also liked by Doran, but he unfortunately does not watch them as often (or, like Firefly, Invader ZIM and The West Wing, those TV shows have been cancelled and Doran might own the DVDs, but still does not watch them as much as the syndicated shows).

Movies

Doran likes to say his favourite movies are the Star Wars film series, but this mostly stems from a childhood dominated by it. His adulthood still regularly involves Star Wars though, as Doran reads many Star Wars novels regularly. Doran's list of favourite Star Wars movies are:

  1. Empire Strikes Back
  2. A New Hope
  3. Return of the Jedi
  4. Revenge of the Sith
  5. The Phantom Menace
  6. Attack of the Clones - This was the only Star Wars movie which Doran did not like while watching in the theater, hence, it is last on his list.

Other movies Doran likes all-time:

For the year 2006, there are many movies that get put on a seperate list, which may or may not make Doran's all-time list above. They are:

The above lists are incomplete, don't complete it unless you stalk Doran.

Online Gameography

  • Battlefield 2 - |EV|Doran (June 2005-September 2005. Presently playing at erratic times)
  • Counter-Strike: Source - |EV|Doran (January 2005-present)
  • Star Wars Galaxies - Doran Nuiawrian (June 26, 2003-July 23, 2003. Starsider server)
    • Doriy Nuiawrisk (October 2003-October 2004. Starsider server)

The above list is incomplete and you cannot complete it unless stalking is a hobby of yours, blah blah blah...

Pets

Doran does not have any pets that bark in Ventrilo. He used to have a Betta fish, but they don't bark. Also, the Betta died because of starvation because Doran was not always there to feed it. The Betta was a very angry fish, anyway, typical of the species.

Doran wishes to own a cat someday, preferably a Tuxedo cat.
