Yes I know that has a bit of a jokey title to it.  In a nutshell, we've had reports the server is being used by non-EV affiliated member - whilst I myself have no qualms about it being left open, I would like to protect its user base.  Now for some the most obvious answer is to password restrict it, and leave at that (this open leaves us open to a future password change if the "active" password is revealed)

How do we protect our investment without blocking new-comers?
As such the server will be making better use of the USER functionality.  This permits us to assign a name & password individually to each user, which can then be further modified to have admin access & channel authorization added as appropriate.

What do I have to do?
When you are next in the vent server, contact an admin (you will see it at the start of our names) and will setup an user account for you.

Why do I need to do it?
In a week's time we will be amending the server settings so all Guest Accounts are MUTE on join, and can only be un-muted by an admin.  In addition it will permit you access to your divisions private channels without having to remember any passwords

Name : eurovent1.gameservers.co m

Vent Normalisation:
(Original Post by Arcarius)

In order for everyone to get the best experience out of Ventrilo, I've compiled a short walk-through on how to set up what people refer to as "Vent Normalization."  This normalization process basically sets Ventrilo up to cap everyones volume as it plays on your computer, forcing everyone to sound roughly the same volume, saving you the hassle of having to boost some people while quieting others.

In order to do this, start up Ventrilo, go to:
Setup -> Voice tab (default) -> SFX (upper right hand corner)

Compressor -> Add

Adjust sliders to the settings found in the attached picture, and voila, you almost never have to mess with peoples' volume again.

(Edited to Include Vent Normalisation Information)

Excellent job there Dougan.

Question though - does "Guest" users get any info in MOTD about where to seek for unmuting, if they are just randomers ?

Also feel free to shoot me a PM (and I'm sure I speak for any other division leader/admin) if I'm not online when you need an account.  I'll set it up ASAP when I receive your message.

The SWTOR division has been and will continue to make an increased push for Vent usage, so any SWTOR sentinels will find it in their best interests to get an account as soon as possible.  In particular, gatherings hosted by our events agency will be making heavy usage of Vent.  Even if you don't have a mic, you'll want to sit in the channel.

Do you just need a pw for the account registration? I presume you will be using our character names as our user name.

We'll usually just give you a password of our own creation.  Your forum or Xfire display name will be used (whichever we're looking at, if they're different).

I thought you would use the name Sekh for me, for example, or Cordo for you etc. Would you mind setting me up and account? Also, might it not be better to let everyone make their own pw so it will be easier to remember?

You dont really have to remember it. You just put it to Vent in EV channel info and it's saved there forever.

Yes, Sekh is your forum name so that's what I'd use.  Smiley  I mean to say that if your character name is different from your forum name, I'd still use your forum name (which is your character name in most cases).

I'll set up your account when I get home from work unless someone gets to it before me.

Unless you use multiple computers like myself. Some of which I would not want to store a private password or other saved login information on. I'm not say its insurmountable to remember the random password, just something to consider.

Also, would anyone mind if I put up a thread about vent normalization?

Yes, Basically it tells you how to go into the user settings and change it so that voices will all sound the same volume. (Not ear bursting "Hai Guys!" when someone that happens to have a really good mic or a really loud voice joins.

So even though we have a member status beside our name we are still admins of our selected channel?

Someone with a UK accent asked me to set up an account...but didn't tell me who they were.

Plus the person they asked for isn't on Vent either.

Hopefully the person who requested this will see it and I can help them out.
