Tribes (easy install)
«
on:
March 01, 2009, 11:01:23 PM »
Raiyn found a great, easy to install version of Tribes - and unlike the links I posted the other day, it's compatible with 64-bit Vista. All you have to do is download this...
http://www.evcitadel.com/harelin/StarsiegeTribes111.rar
and extract it to any location. No install or patching required, just go in and open Tribes.exe if you're on XP, or T1Vista.exe if you're on Vista. Only one more thing required...
1. Start the game up.
2. Open the console. (default is the backtick/tilde ` key, which is located directly under the Escape key)
3. Paste this into the console by pressing CTRL-V:
Code:
$Server::MasterAddressN0 = "t1m1.masters.tribesmasterserver.com:28000 t1m1.pu.net:28000 t1m1.tribes0.com:28000 skbmaster.ath.cx:28000 kigen.ath.cx:28000 t1m1.masters.dynamix.com:28000";
Now close and restart the game.
(If your server list is still not refreshing, make sure that in your tribes client, under network settings, you have the US Master server selected.)
This will add all the active servers to your list. There are still a LOT of servers up. I'll start my own server too and we can get some games going in the next few days, just hop on Xfire/Vent.
(If you're not familiar with Tribes, you can read about it here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starsiege_Tribes
)
------
30 DEC 2009 ADDENDUM:
If the Step 3 above does not work, try this instead:
1. Start your Starsiege: Tribes 1 client.
2. Open the Network section under the Options area.
3. Then click add at the bottom.
4. Now enter the name, call it tribesmasterserver.com
5. Then enter the Address:
t1m1.masters.tribesmaste
rserver.com:28000
6. Click Done at the bottom
7. Click back on the play tab. Once on the server list page, click REFRESH ALL and the server list from tribesmasterserver.com should show up.

I remember you mentioning tribes on Xfire. Was that Tribes 1? What's the difference with Tribes 2? Tribes 2 also seems to be freely available as well @ tribesnext.com, but I've played neither.

As my Quake Live setup seems to be unsolvable, I just might give Tribes a go to fulfill my "quick fps" urges.
Drop me a line when the server is up, Cordo.

I played Tribes 2 quite a bit (I was actually involved in pre-release then much like SWTOR/SWG and exchanged a few emails with their lead developer to solve a tech problem people were having), but I honestly wasn't much of a fan after playing it compared to T1. T2 feels a lot more clunky. It's still fun in different ways, though.
We can play T2 eventually if there's sufficient interest, but for now I'm just going to focus on T1. It'll run on everyone's computers and its the original and most popular of the three games.
I'll get a server started after work today (although feel free to start without me if I'm not in your time zone).

It's all good. I'm not sure I can keep up with QL for long. My wrist just doesn't twitch very well. I watched some Tribe 1 vids on youtube. In terms of QL, it looks like using the rocket and rail gun for the most part, but in much more wide open spaces.

That's a good observation. It's similar. I find myself landing some of my best hits with a rocket launcher while in the air in QL, aiming down not exactly at the enemy but nearby (so he's hit by the AOE). Very similar to a spinfusor (the disc launcher you saw in the videos).
But Tribes is very strategic... jetpacks drain energy, so you have to use them wisely (i.e. you don't want to be stuck on the ground with all your energy drained while someone is flying right above you; they can hit you easily but you'd have to shoot them out of the air). There are also vehicles, a command screen to issue orders, deployable items (turrets, inventory/ammo stations and such), etc. For a 1998 release, this was
way
far ahead of its time.

This looks cool, I've never played tribes before but I'm gonna download it and give it a go.

Be interested in giving this a poke again, any chance of maybe a date/time for everybody to take the tribes plunge together?

Giving this a bump since a few have recently installed it..
As a note, this still works for me in Windows 7. I did notice, however, that I had to switch the video settings to OpenGL before the game would have its proper appearance - and you'll definitely want to increase the resolution from its default.

I found this:
http://download.cnet.com/Starsiege-Tribes-full-install/3000-7441_4-10294998.html
Is this the exact same version, will it enable me to join your multiplayer games?

I'd go with the same download as everyone else, depends on the patch version.

Shouldn't be outdated, lots of us have played in Tribes using these instructions just recently. A syntax error shouldn't show up unless you're accidentally copying more than you should, or not copying all of it, or maybe somehow adding text when you paste it. I'll provide an alternative way of getting that step done.

If it's still not working for you, try the alternative steps I've just added to the original post.
